PRS™-PROBES FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Topics: General / Technical / Logistical / Ordering / Past Research

Are the PRS™-probe data publishable?

Ion-exchange resins, in membrane or bead form, have been used extensively in research and the results are detailed in hundreds of refereed articles since the early 1980’s. Currently, there are over 100 PRS™-probe-related peer reviewed papers with many more undergoing reviews and being written. There are also over 50 theses and dissertations that have involved PRS™-probe technology in their research. The difficulty of publishing PRS™ data is now in the past, as studies involving PRS™-probes have appeared in over 30 journals across the world, including: Canadian Journal of Soil Science, Weed Science, Canadian Journal of Plant Science, Journal of Plant Nutrition, Journal of Crop Science, Annals of Botany, Soil Biology and Biochemistry, Oecologia, Global Change Biology, Forest Ecology and Management, and Ecological Applications to name a few.

You can use Google Scholar and see for yourself.

The initial difficulty in getting ion-exchange resin data published in the past was the unfamiliarity with the unit of measure. Specifically, what does a nutrient flux measurement (i.e., amount of ion adsorbed per amount of ion-exchange surface area per length of burial period) really mean in terms of nutrient availability to a plant? Simply stated, a nutrient supply rate was not the conventional measure that soil fertility, chemistry, and agronomy professionals were used to considering. Instead of the familiar static index of nutrient availability expressed as a concentration (i.e., ppm or kg/ha), nutrient supply rates are a dynamic measure of nutrient availability. Over time the value of ion-exchange resin technology has become apparent and its use more widespread in both research and commercial applications. Today, the PRS™-probes provide a basis for determining fertilizer recommendations for different cereal, oil seed, pulse, and forage crops that are applied to millions of acres of farmland in Western Canada.

PRS™-probes have been used across the globe and some of the locations are shown in the a map here.
